If you are planning to apply for a U.S. visa, here is an important update. Starting September 2025, most people will need to go for a face-to-face interview at the U.S. embassy or consulate. The interview waiver or “dropbox” option is now limited.
What’s new?
Before, many applicants could renew their visas without an interview. Now, most visa types like student visas (F1/F2), work visas (H, L), and tourist visas (B1/B2) will need interviews again.
Who can still skip the interview?
Only a few categories like diplomats or people renewing a B1/B2 visa within 12 months of expiry might qualify. But officers can ask for an interview anytime if needed.

The U.S. government wants to make sure visa security is strong after relaxing rules during the pandemic.
